ASEAN FEDERATION OF GLASS MANUFACTURES

THE 46TH ASEAN GLASS CONFERENCE
23rd – 26th September, 2024

About AFGM

The ASEAN Federation of Glass Manufacturers is now a 45 years-old regional industry association, composed of glass manufacturing companies in the South East Asian region.

It was formed in 1977 by 19 glass manufacturing companies from the then five member countries of ASEAN who convened on 23rd – 24th July 1977 in Manila, Philippines for the purpose of setting up a regional glass industry association. This event is then declared as the first ASEAN Glass Conference and the official birth of the AFGM.  It was agreed that the AFGM will consist of 5 National Glass Association (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and Singapore) and at that meeting, the by-laws and the constitution of the AFGM was drafted.

At the second AFGM conference, also in Manila in 1977, the constitution and by-laws were ratified.  Signing for their respective countries were Raul C. Hernandez (Philippines), Soegiono Hartadi (Indonesia), Leslie Struys (Malaysia), Lam Ying (Singapore), and Chainarong Srifuengfung (Thailand).  Then on July 26th, 1978, the AFGM was given interim recognition by the ASEAN Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ASEAN-CCI) and became a member of its working group on Industrial Complementation.

Since 1978, The AFGM Conferences have been held every year, usually in September-November.  These conferences were named the AFGM Annual Conference, but then was changed and now officially named The ASEAN Glass Conference by the ASEAN Federation of Glass Manufacturers and since 1981, every conference carried a theme.

Until 2011, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand have taken turns hosting the event which were hosted and organized by their respective national glass industry association.  No conference has ever been held in other ASEAN Countries since they do not have any glass industry and/or glass association until 2012, when Vietnam as the newest member of the AFGM at that time hosted the 36th ASEAN Glass Conference in Hanoi.

Attendance of the conference has not been limited to AFGM members only.  Glass manufacturers from other countries, as well as industry suppliers and providers from all over the world have been attending the conferences throughout the years.  During the 3rd conference in Thailand 1978 there were only 40 delegates but the attendance kept on increasing and by 1989, at the 14th AFGM Conference in Cebu, Philippines, the delegates went up to more than 300 delegates, a level of attendance is maintained in succeeding conferences until now.

The AFGM prides itself to unite the glass industry in the ASEAN region and will continue to use its platform to connect the ASEAN glass industry to the world stage.
